I get questions pretty regularly about creativity....how did I find mine, how did I follow it...how to inspire children...how to begin the process in general. I try to answer anyone that asks me as simply and truthfully as I can....and it usually sounds something like this. You just have to begin to be creative. Sounds so obvious- eh? Well in reality it is. The problem is that for many that is a really scary thing to hear, because it just seems so much more complicated ..but it's not. WHAT!? What do you mean just begin...?
Well...what are you passionate about....what do love to do....what have you tried and liked..or not liked...what gives you butterflies when you see it...what makes your heart beat quickly and the palm of your hands sweaty because you want it so much ( great place to insert a dirty joke...but I'll stop at the mere suggestion)? What could you do for hours on end, forgetting that you are even hungry for food ( except for tea and cookies of course) ....forgetting that you need to go pick up the kids...forgetting that anything around you exists....! If you have never explored something that makes you feel this way then you need to seriously find your poetic wanderlust .....! The feeling I'm describing is key to happiness..key to good health and well being.....key to waking up everyday with a smile on your face. It's no promise of a perfect life ( that sounds too gooey anyway...perfection..blah!!) ...but it's a promise of a passionate life....I can tell you this with all my heart! It will also allow you to deal with life's ebbs and flows just that much more gracefully. Reality is..life is happening to you and around you everyday...yes, it is stressful..yes..it is ever evolving.and yes..it is ( in my book anyway) a necessity to find your creative passion and channel it in whatever way you can. READY? ....tra-la....
Start small..it's what I tell everyone..it's what I have always done. ( mind you I am obsessive when I really like something..so take that with a grain of salt...I like to create, so I do it... A LOT ) . Don't assume you'll be great..or even good from the get go. You may actually suck..but it's ok..if you love it..if it feels right...if you keep on going...you get good..then you'll get great. ( just don't ever get cocky..got it!!) Be willing to edit....whatever you do. Photography, gardening, cooking, painting, decorating, drawing......not everything will turn out...and that's actually a really great thing...it's how you learn...how you keep going...and how you find your burn for this bit of creating. Be willing to experiment..nearly non stop...it's how I get my best stuff. That goes for anything I do..I enter into things fearlessly...then I go like mad at them...I work really, really hard..at pretty much anything I do....I am in a constant state of experimentation, which is messy..imperfect ( double yay) and filled with flaws and failings..but..it's also quite a lovely high when things do work out. ( cakes, photos, dinners, gardens, art..you name it sister...it all falls under...CREATING!!) ya-hooo!
Be willing to make your own way..your own rules..your own stuff. Yes, yes...get inspired by others...be willing to read on techniques etc. but don't ever, ever , ever allow your lack of knowledge or inability to do things the way " others" have, to stop you.......just do your thing. I have had to learn many times in my life how to do new things ( so have you BTW) I did not begin any of them armed with a degree under my wing....I sort of arrived at them out of want and desperation..then I figured out along the way how I needed to make them work for me. I knew I could never learn all the techniques necessary for all the things I wanted to do..but in most cases I wanted them so badly that I found my own way..made my own rules.....( yes, skinned my knees a time or three) but when you want something badly enough you will find a way to make them happen.
A few more thoughts on starting your creative process..( or further inspiring you if you are already merrily on your way)! Perfect conditions are non existent. Hope that one is heard loud and clear...there are always distractions ( I can be horribly distracted..it's part of how I learn) but...I always know I need follow through...I cannot start and abandon unless I have fully seen something through. But..along the same lines..be willing to try things in a ga-zillion different ways . You need to be a constant explorer....keep your eyes peeled all the time..creative opportunities are everywhere. Not to ramble on...( but why not) and you have heard this from me for( like)ever.....surround yourself with beauty all the time. The shots in this post are of my studio in our house..and I love being in here..it's my creative cocoon.
I would always suggest before you decide to turn your creative passions into a business...try it for a while as a hobby. You'll make better choices, have an easier time with exploring and be more willing to invest your time if you start it this way..and if it's something you want to make a living at....well then..onward!! But, just because you want to explore your creativity ..it doesn't mean you have to quit your job to do it!
Let me know your thoughts...I know so many of you are truly exploring life to her fullest....tasting all that is around you...keeping your hearts and souls open to goodness around every corner....what are you creating...or thinking about creating? Do tell....!!
Cheers + xx,
