I get insanely giddy garden thoughts all year long...and while our season here in the California countryside is pretty much all year, we do still have our "winter"...a small respite...while a few things die back... there is all around you.... the verdant garden spirit you so crave. The trees have been full of blossoms since the end of January...not sure who's more confused , them or me... I love the perplexing thought of it...trees with flowers in January....I point them out everyday to our boys and everyday I think they point out to me that yes, I showed them yesterday too. There are things you cannot plant in your garden here until march..and to be honest my garden is a narly weed bed as I type. My weekend project is to do a clean up...but I have been collecting images on Pinterest, dreaming .....thought I would share...I know you guys are lovers of nature..and dreamers of all things..splendidly lush. I would call these..... next layers ...( beyond the obvious tidying up...or not?) I love garden mirrors I have a few, and some in the chicken coop as well....I love the way they work in a garden..adding a bit of shimmer..even when the garden looks like she has fallen a bit...I think I need to drag one of my bigger ones out there....I suppose the same goes for you.....a trek up to the attic today might not be a bad idea..you must have something shiny and dusty up there? don't you?
I have mentioned this before ....as they are not a flower I have ever craved so much....roses but I always did admire them from afar . But here where we live they grow like mad...near weeds like the rosemary that fill many ditches....rambling all over the place....all year they seem to bloom..and in every color. Propagation 101 is high on my to do list. But I fear that list may get the best of me..it is long and alluring....but roses, roses...rambling over everything..in pinks and whites. Carry on....and don't mind me as I lose myself here and there. ( you might be feeling a bit like my boys soon...yes, yes, mom you already showed us the blooming tress......you see.....just don't call me mom.) and you?....roses, no roses.....you like?
I am pondering how to allow my chickens the free reign that they have and yet....the protection my plants need from them....I have found lots of options..and I think they need their own garden to pick over too. But I saw this and I think somewhere around here it would be a cool addition a pallet garden . I like that its higher up ( nice and easy for those of us with shot knees) and feels thrown together in a cool, frenchie forgotten garden/industrial modern way ( whoa rambler..have caffeine much....)
Just sayin.....more roses. So pretty when they start to fade....one must appreciate this.
Succulents . My parents have been into succulents for a long time. I always admired the way they would create little succulent gardens that were stand alone, yet elegantly tied back to rest of their gardens. Then last weekend I was at this little garden joint in town...they ( succulents) were dripping off everything....it was crazy cool . So check this out...what a great idea....use those tomato cages ( that never work for tomatoes anyway) and make succulent cones. Are you as wild over this as I am...seriously...mental! I am not ( as I have told you before) a house plant person..I kill them, they hate me. But I can and will do this outside....though I love the idea of it inside....but just with out the death part. I am also perching a bird on mine...like they did...tra-la!
Can a girl ever have too many little garden sheds. I think the idea of them dotting ones property is just the bee's knees. All a bit different....each one telling her own story...some close in...some far away..beckoning you to come with a book in one hand and a chicken tucked under your arm. ( hahaha..just wanted to see if you were paying attention or off dreaming of rambling roses.....) Though I do walk around for real with a chicken under my arm....yes, yes...very Laura Ingalls I know..laugh all you want..
So while we are garden dreaming...let's just chat about this one..shall we. Side patios....hidden gardens...more pea gravel ( yes, yes...please more) I have this thing for gardens that feel very used....like that one right there...like someone is really home....a bit overgrown...you can smell it can't you? You just want to walk out there barefoot with a glass of wine as the sun is just starting to wane...and saunter about......clipping the herbs....rubbing bits of lavender between your fingers..... it's just devastatingly good. It's that good. OK....chew on that for a bit. NEXT!
Gardens need to spread themselves out..... the veranda is the perfect place for ones garden to get even more untamed. The idea of this lush setting kind of has a hold on me.....how could it not. Tell me this speaks to you...in a Freida Kahlo....or better yet...Miss Havisham ( one of my all time favorite characters mind you) way. Now , you may need to rent Great Expectations tonight....heck have a martini while watching it...and then put yourself here.....oh..baby...yeah....see there...now we are all on the same page. All is well in the world. Cheers!
Back to reality ...and propagation ...this is cool right... a mini greenhouse. So stinking smart! I love this...totally doing it....when I go to my friends homes with my scissors in hand and snip at all their pretty roses...then I can come home...and make these. YAY! You too right....!?!
Just does not get any better....agodess in the garden. We have a few ( not quite so grand) ...but I adore the mossiness of this one. She is the queen. It's good to have some folly ( or in my case a lot of folly) in the jardin. ( always better to sing it in french when talking follies)
This is getting to be a long post....my apologies...but as you know I am just a girl that can ramble on.....! So since I am feeling all folly-full a gypsy caravan is pretty much one of my fantasy things in life. I REALLY.. .really ..really want one....I would like to build one ( or have John truth be told) or better yet..if you are a gypsy, or know of any (?) and they are tired of their own vardo....just drop it here. I will love it forever ( sounding a bit Taylor Swift here...gah!) . Again, tell me you don't want this in your garden....come ON!! Think of all the possibilities here...insane! Problem is John might lose me to it..as in...I might move right in. ( I may need a drink after this post....it's too early though...but maybe more caffeine would do)
This one is ever obvious a water element is just essential in every garden. I am lobbying to pass new laws in all states regarding this, so be prepared to sign on. Then once it's the law of the land you just will have no choice...( imagine me a lobbyist.dear god, that will drive all of you to the bottle...so sorry my darlings) Just get with the program so I don't need to fly to D.C. ok! ( p.s. make your own water element..get on over to pinterest and start that board...me too)
Oh, fine. I am obsessed . Another potting shed. Need I say more. ( ever?)
And....( I know that's not grammatically correct but it's my blog so there... ) just swoon with me for a minute.... monet's garden . REALLY? I don't even like geraniums, but now I think there is no choice. Sort of like water elements.
ok sisters.....See ya later.....walking barefoot through the garden & since you may still be 3 feet deep in snow ( I remember it well) ..put your UGGS on and just get out there....it will be melting soon enough..now you can dream......( or drink..whichever) .
Cheers + kisses,
p.s. ..(and you thought I was done..ha) Miss Havisham is a good chicken name NO? Though I have a "no naming the chickens" rule that I follow strictly ( thanks to coyotes, possum , owls, hawks and other varmints) ...except for when I break it..like I did recently..but I may need to again...twice in one week..yikes ok. the end.
